![]() ![]() I don't typically bother with learning new shortcuts beyond system presets until I commit to a tool and have been using it for some time.ģ) What would you like to see improved in your writing workflow? I’ve tried countless other tools but Notes, Notion and Docs are my heavyweights.Ģ) What's the one thing that you couldn't live without?įormatting tools/shortcuts that are familiar out of the box, using rich text not markdown, and the ability to easily clear formatting all at once (given how much I copy/paste between tools). I also prefer version control here in Docs. For example, things like marketing content, blogs, and agreements I wouldn’t bother writing anywhere else. I use Google Docs for work that requires a lot of back-and-forth re: collaboration, editing, commenting. ![]() So it’s more of a finishing place with writing. I dislike how hard it can be to rearrange their content containers when it comes to plain text and lists and it gets in the way of getting thoughts down. Notion is less of a draft zone because of some wonky details, i.e. If I’m brainstorming with my team internally, or need a record of something shared wiki-style, I paste into Notion (embed screenshots, photos, spreadsheets). From there it depends on who’s reading it. I draft almost everything personally and professionally in Apple’s native Notes app because it’s lightweight-the beginnings of webpages, email, presentation outlines, articles. The thing that’s still lacking is the editing workflow when you hand copy off to others and then merge in their feedback there just doesn’t seem to be anything that nails both the writing and the collaborative editing workflow.ġ) What writing app(s) do you usually use and for what? That and high quality Markdown formatting-with standard keyboard shortcuts for formatting that add the correct markdown characters (say CMD+B adding two asterisks around the text for Bold). That’s hard to put a finger on, but iA Writer and Ulysses both feel so polished, that’s the biggest thing that makes them a pleasure to use. To me, the thing I can’t live without is a clean, nicely designed interface that makes writing feel nice. Sublime Text plus Markdown Editing can be a great writing tool if you take the time to tweak it and add spell check and other writing-focused tools. The Most Dangerous Writing App is a hilarious way to force yourself to write if you stop before the timer is up it removes everything you’ve written.Super powerful if you take the time to set it up. ![]() Drafts is a great automated notes app where you write stuff and use actions to send it to other software.a quick store list or brainstormed article titles). Both iA Writer and Ulysses work equally well on iOS and Mac. ![]() So I typically end up gathering notes in iA Writer, then working on longform in Ulysses. It hides markdown formatting for links and images, which is both great and terrible-it’s great to streamline text while writing, but makes copying and pasting back and forth frustrating for editing. It’s library management and search tools are perhaps the best of any writing app I’ve used. Ulysses is my other primary writing app, typically for longer form writing. I also often use it for full long-form writing. It’s what I reach for when writing random things throughout the day instead of writing something in the text box of a website, I’ll write it there and copy it over. Love its simplicity and lack of settings-and that it provides a great Markdown writing experience while still being pure plain text. IA Writer is perhaps the writing app I’ve consistently used the longest. I’ve tried so many writing apps, and still use too many but find each has a unique spot and fits certain tasks better. This is a fun one-I have a soft spot for writing apps. ![]()
